It was a night to forget for Ajax on Wednesday as they suffered a humiliating 6-0 defeat away to AZ in the cup. Troy Parrott was amongst the goals yet again as the Irish striker helped himself to a hat-trick. It wasn’t the result Ajax fans or decision makers would have hoped for after it was decided that Fred Grim would remain in charge of the club for the rest of the season. Results had actually turned around under Grim in recent times, but this result is a major shock and see’s the side dumped out of the cup.
The side certainly weren’t helped by the red card awarded to Owen Wijndal in the 66th minute, but by then the side were already 4-0 down. Alongside Parrott, Peer Koopmeiners, Kees Smit and Ibrahim Sadiq made sure that AZ enjoyed a 6-0 win. Parrott is in fine form this season, adding to his memorable moment for the Republic of Ireland during World Cup qualification. In 24 games for AZ this season he has scored an impressive 16 goals. He is just four away from the 20 he managed for the side in 47 games last season.
For Ajax, they must now wait a further season to try and add to their 20 KNVB Cup titles. The last time that Ajax won the trophy was back in the 2020/2021 season when they beat Vitesse.
