Grimsby Town knocked Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup after 26 penalties in an epic shoot-out.
The Mariners had an exceptional first half at Blundell Park with André Onana – back in the Manchester United team for the first time this season – at fault for both goals.
Charles Vernam opened the scoring in style when he controlled Darragh Burns' pass well before firing in a low drive that went under Onana.
Then eight minutes later it was 2-0. This time it was a corner that Onana didn't deal with, allowing former United youth player Tyrell Warren to finish.
Ruben Amorim made three changes at half-time with Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matthijs de Ligt all coming on.
The visitors were much better in the second half, although it was hard to be worse, and Mbeumo pulled one back in the 75th minute when he cut inside and drilled a low effort past Christy Pym.
Then in the 89th minute United equalised when Harry Maguire nodded in at the far post following a corner.
The Premier League side had chances to seal the win in stoppage time but instead the game went to an incredible shoot-out.
Clarke Odour had missed his kick meaning that on United's fifth penalty Matheus Cunha had the chance to win the game. But the Brazilian's effort was saved by Pym to send the shoot-out to an extended sudden death.
With 25 penalties gone, of which 23 were scored including both by Pym and Onana, Mbeumo stepped up and saw his shot bounce back off the bar to ensure Grimsby Town knocked Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup.
