Gualtieri eyes Euro 2032 and Olympic bids with Roma and Lazio stadium moves | OneFootball

The Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, says the capital’s rival clubs are pushing ahead with separate stadium plans, seen as platforms for future major events.

According to The Laziali, Gualtieri, speaking in New York, linked the projects to hopes of hosting Euro 2032 matches and supporting an Olympic bid for 2036 or 2040. He said Roma’s plan is further advanced, while Lazio’s is also progressing.

Roma are pursuing a 60,000-seat stadium in Pietralata, targeted for 2031. The clubs have long shared the Stadio Olimpico, which is state owned and operated.

Lazio intend to revive the derelict Stadio Flaminio, aiming to open in late 2029 or early 2030.

Although the municipality granted initial approval, the Flaminio plan faces financial and bureaucratic hurdles. The Roman superintendency has requested changes to protect historic elements, and the family of architect Pier Luigi Nervi has objected.

The club has yet to present a convincing, detailed plan to finance the €440 million project.
