He has been the subject of speculation for weeks, and now Vincent Kompany himself has spoken out about the possibility of succeeding Guardiola at Manchester City.

In the run-up to the DFB Cup round of 16 against Union Berlin, the Bayern coach was asked about statements made by Uli Hoeneß. The honorary president had claimed that Pep Guardiola saw Kompany as his successor at Manchester City. Kompany himself was unimpressed: „I’ve said often enough that I’m not here to comment on statements made by Uli Hoeneß. I have great respect for him, but I’m not going to do that,“ the 39-year-old emphasized.

The Belgian is stoically calm in the face of rumours of a move to the Premier League club. „In soccer, you can never think too far ahead. I’m 100 per cent focused on what we can achieve with Bayern – I just want to live in the present. I have zero thoughts about anything else, just tomorrow’s game and my team,“ he explained at the press conference ahead of the cup game.

In the past, Guardiola had already publicly named Kompany as his preferred candidate for the time after his own departure. „Pep already said that two years ago and last year too. I can also say now who the next coach of FC Bayern Munich will be. But that doesn’t decide anything and doesn’t play a role for me,“ Kompany made clear.

Kompany is held in high regard at Manchester City

TEAMtalk recently reported that Kompany is being considered as a serious candidate for the Manchester City job despite his long-term contract in Munich. The former City captain is held in high regard by the Sky Blues and is expected to play a central role at the club in the post-Guardiola era.

However, FC Bayern are not thinking of a premature departure. Just a few weeks ago, the record champions extended Kompany’s contract until 2029 – a clear signal. Head of Sport Max Eberl made it clear: the Belgian has fully arrived in Munich and is pursuing clear long-term goals together with the club.

A departure of the coach in the near future is therefore considered extremely unlikely, and Kompany himself leaves no doubt about this: „I have zero thoughts about anything other than my players and my team.
