Pep Guardiola has hinted that Manchester City will adapt their game after the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain.

Donnarumma joined the club on transfer deadline day in a £26m deal from the European champions. The Italian replaces Ederson as City’s first-choice goalkeeper, with the latter leaving for Fenerbahce after eight seasons at the Etihad.

Ederson built a reputation as arguably the best ball-playing goalkeeper in world football at City, but Guardiola has said he will not ask Donnarumma to replicate his style of his predecessor.

“I always try to adapt to the quality of the players. I wouldn’t demand Gigi [Donnarumma] do something he is uncomfortable with. We are talking about the best player [goalkeeper] I have ever seen with distribution, short and long passes, in Ederson.

“We didn’t take Gigi to do what Ederson has done. Gigi has another quality.”

Asked what he believes Donnarumma will bring to his side, Guardiola added: “He is so tall. He is so huge. All the keepers save shots, bring personality to the team and be a big presence. He has done that in the biggest games. He is going to concede goals but all of us will help him try not to.”
