Pep Guardiola has issued an apology to Jose Mourinho after the pair exchanged words in the aftermath of the Manchester City boss’ six-finger salute at Anfield last weekend.

The Spaniard’s show of defiance to taunts from Liverpool fans led to comparisons with Mourinho, which Guardiola quickly squashed, reminding everyone that he has won double the amount of Premier League titles than his Portuguese counterpart.

Mourinho, currently managing in Turkey with Fenerbahce, responded by questioning the legitimacy of Guardiola’s title wins, with City facing 115 Premier League charges for allegedly breaching financial rules.

“He won six trophies and I won three, but I won fairly and cleanly,” Mourinho quipped.

“If I lost, I want to congratulate my opponent because he was better than me. I don’t want to win by dealing with 150 lawsuits.”

Guardiola admits he never intended to offend Mourinho and was merely just stating a fact.

“If I offended him [Mourinho], I’m so sorry,” he replied.

“But it was a joke. The fact is, he has three, I have six. So this is a fact.
