Pep Guardiola rarely allows sentiment to spill into the public domain, yet even he could not mask the emotional weight of Bernardo Silva’s impending departure from Man City. As reported by The Independent, the Catalan admitted that Silva’s exit will feel deeply personal, a reflection not just of footballing loss but of a bond forged over nearly a decade of sustained excellence.
Silva, who confirmed he will leave when his contract expires this summer, departs having amassed 451 appearances and 19 trophies. Those numbers alone place him among the most decorated figures of Guardiola’s reign, but statistics only scratch the surface of his importance. Silva has been a tactical chameleon, equally effective as a roaming No 8, a false winger or a relentless presser in Guardiola’s high-octane system.
Guardiola’s words captured that broader significance in full:
“Yeah, absolutely it’s part of when this type of players. There are many in the last years who have gone. it’s part of. I’m talking for myself.
Part of myself is leaving too so. It would be difficult to imagine it without him. As I’ve said many times off and off the pitch, I think he makes an incredible statement during nine years and especially has been massively, massively, massively important.
Hopefully we can deliver to him, he’s going to help us, I know that. He’s a special player in that terms. Hopefully we can deliver a good month, because he deserves it, he deserves the best.”
It is rare to hear Guardiola speak in such personal terms. This is not merely about replacing a midfielder. It is about losing a trusted lieutenant who embodied the manager’s philosophy.

Bernardo Silva’s story at Man City is one of evolution and endurance. Signed in 2017, he arrived as a technically gifted playmaker. Under Guardiola, he became something more demanding and more complete.
He ran more, pressed harder and adapted quicker than almost any of his peers. In title races defined by fine margins, Silva was often the difference. His performances in high-stakes fixtures, particularly against rivals such as Arsenal and Liverpool, reinforced his reputation as a player for decisive moments.
Guardiola has overseen the departures of club icons before. Vincent Kompany, Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Fernandinho all left indelible marks. Yet Bernardo Silva’s exit feels distinct. Perhaps it is the timing, with Man City still entrenched in a Premier League title race. Perhaps it is the manner, with Silva choosing to move on at a point where he remains central to the side.
What is clear is that Guardiola views him as one of the defining figures of his tenure.
If there is a narrative thread that runs through Guardiola’s comments, it is motivation. Man City are once again locked in a fierce battle for the Premier League crown, with Arsenal pushing them to the limit.
Silva’s departure adds an emotional layer to that contest. Guardiola has framed the run-in as an opportunity to give Silva the send-off he deserves. Another league title would not simply be silverware. It would be a fitting tribute to a player who has shaped the modern identity of Man City.
There is precedent for such farewells. Aguero’s final season ended with a title. Kompany bowed out having delivered a thunderous goal that propelled City towards glory. Guardiola understands the symbolism. He also understands the practical challenge.
Silva will not want sentiment. He will want to leave as he has played, decisive, relentless and victorious.
Every great side must eventually confront transition. For Guardiola and Man City, that process has been gradual rather than abrupt. Key figures have departed, yet the machine has continued to function at elite level.
Replacing Bernardo Silva, however, presents a unique challenge. Few players combine his technical quality, tactical intelligence and work rate. Fewer still can execute Guardiola’s complex positional demands with such consistency.
This is where Guardiola’s next phase begins. Recruitment will be critical, but so too will internal development. Younger players will be asked to step into roles that Silva once made his own.
For now, though, the focus remains on the present. Guardiola, ever the perfectionist, is not interested in nostalgia. His priority is clear. Deliver success, honour Silva properly and ensure Man City’s dominance endures beyond another changing of the guard.
