Manchester City’s season has taken an unexpected turn, but one thing remains clear – Pep Guardiola is standing firmly behind Erling Braut Haaland.
As the Norwegian striker endures his most challenging spell since arriving in England, Guardiola has offered his unwavering support, insisting the team must do more to unlock his potential.
Haaland began the season in unstoppable form, scoring 10 goals in his first five Premier League matches. However, the goals have dried up in recent weeks, with just one in his last six league games.
His personal dip in form has coincided with City’s dramatic decline, leaving them seventh in the table and far from the imperious side that dominated last season.
Despite the downturn, Guardiola has refused to place the blame on Haaland’s shoulders.
“It’s about us, not just one player,” the City boss said. “When Erling was so prolific, it was about us, the team. He’s so important for us, but we need to use him better.”
Haaland’s struggles are emblematic of the broader issues within Guardiola’s squad.
The fluidity and creativity that once defined City have faltered, leaving Haaland isolated and starved of opportunities.
Guardiola admitted that a combination of small and large factors has contributed to their downturn.
“The guys are running more than ever, but there are many details making us not as good as we were,” he added.
The City manager has made it clear that addressing these issues will take a collective effort.
Ahead of their Boxing Day clash with Everton, Guardiola emphasised the importance of togetherness in getting back on track. Training sessions, even on Christmas Day, are part of that process.
“We will stay over here and play on Boxing Day,” he said. “It’s our job, it’s our duty. Hopefully, the players will want to be here because it’s crucial we come back to our best.”
Haaland continues to work tirelessly and Guardiola is adamant that the striker’s goals will return.
As City prepare to face an Everton side buoyed by recent results, the spotlight remains on Haaland.
Guardiola’s focus is not on the individual but on the collective effort required to restore Man City to their former heights.
With his backing, Haaland may yet lead the charge in turning their season around.
