While it was not the game that either country wanted to play in, the Miami clash was one of the most entertaining of the 2026 World Cup.

England boss Thomas Tuchel made a number of changes to his starting line-up but Guéhi kept his starting place while City team-mate Rayan Cherki started for France.

The Three Lions stormed into an early lead with Declan Rice striking in the third minute and Ezri Konsa adding a second 15 minutes later.

Bukayo Saka then added two more before the break to punish a lethargic performance from the French side.

However, they hit back after the break in Didier Deschamps final game in charge after 14 years with two goals from Kylian Mbappe and another from Bradley Barcola.

Anderson came on to try to stem the wave and England won a penalty that was converted by Saka to complete hat-trick.

But the goals kept coming with Ousmane Dembele making it 5-4 before Jude Bellingham wrapped up the win deep in injury time.

England’s squad, which included James Trafford and Nico O’Reilly, claimed the third spot – a highest-placed finish since winning the trophy in 1966.

City could still have a World Cup winner with Rodri part of the Spain team that will take on Argentina in the final in New Jersey on Sunday at 20:00 (UK).
