Marc Guehi has backed his club and country team-mate Phil Foden to get back to his best “very soon”.

Foden has found himself in and out of the City team of late but was given a chance to impress England boss Thomas Tuchel in his country’s last two games – a 1-1 draw with Uruguay followed by a 1-0 defeat to Japan.

It has been a mixed season for the 25-year-old, but Guehi says with the support of his team-mates he can show the sort of form that saw him named the Football Writers’ Association player of the year two seasons ago.

“Phil, as we know, is a fantastic player.

“It’s obviously not been easy for him but I think we’re all behind him. We’re all giving him our love and we all know how much we want him to do well.

“It’s just about sticking together, being there for him.

“Nobody always knows what’s going on behind the scenes, they just know what’s going on here but he’s someone that’s very strong, someone that loves being around the guys and has loved being back as well so as long as we stick together and have his back.

“I think we’ll see the best of of Phil very soon.”

England were without key players including Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice against Uruguay and Japan, and Guehi stressed that they will make a big difference when the World Cup comes around.

“When those players have played, they’ve been fantastic for England,” he said.

“We’ve seen what we can do when everyone is on the pitch. Obviously there’s been a lot of new connections and we’re still getting to know each other and get that familiarity.”
