UEFA’s Appeals Body has reduced Matteo Guendouzi’s European suspension, handing Fenerbahce a lift before their Champions League trip to Unai Emery's Aston Villa.

The club said in a statement that, having served the first game of his ban against Roma on 10 September 2024, the French midfielder will be able to play at Villa Park on 14 October 2024.

Guendouzi was initially given a four-match suspension, with two of those suspended. The new ruling trims the sanction to three matches, with two suspended for a probationary period of one year. Under the original terms he was set to miss both the Roma opener and the visit to Birmingham.

The case stemmed from Fenerbahce’s 2-1 win over Lyon on 26 August in the play-off second leg, after which he was accused of insulting individuals and provoking the home crowd. The actions were judged a breach of decent conduct and the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body also imposed a €50,000 fine.

Keeping Guendouzi for Villa is viewed as significant for Ismail Kartal’s side. The former Arsenal midfielder brings Premier League experience, grit and control that Fenerbahce struggle to replicate. Supporters responded with delight on social media as attention turns to the Villa Park showdown.
