Former Lazio midfielder Matteo Guendouzi will miss Fenerbahce’s Champions League trip to Roma at the Stadio Olimpico next week after receiving a four-match European suspension. UEFA confirmed two matches are suspended for one year on probation, and issued a €50,000 fine.
He was sanctioned for insulting and provoking spectators and for breaching basic rules of decent conduct, relating to the recent play-off against Lyon.
After Fenerbahce’s 2-1 away win in the second leg, which knocked Lyon out of the 2026-27 competition, Guendouzi appeared to taunt home fans with references to Marseille. He was seen and heard saying “Allez l’OM” to pitchside cameras after full-time, prompting an angry reaction from the Marseille players and staff, who had just failed to qualify.
A mass brawl then broke out between the two teams in the tunnel as players and staff left the pitch.
Guendouzi and Dybala have frequently clashed in Rome derbies at the Olimpico. After Roma’s most recent victory over Lazio last season, Dybala said he still enjoyed himself even though his friend was absent, a remark aimed at Guendouzi.
