Guillermo Ochoa, appearing at his sixth World Cup with Mexico, has announced he will retire when the tournament finishes. The player said this in a video on FIFA’s YouTube channel.
The 40-year-old said the national team has been the guiding thread of his career and life, and that football loses its meaning without it. He added he leaves calm, head high and proud after giving everything. He is Mexico’s third-choice goalkeeper at this World Cup.
Last week he said he was 100% sure of ending his international career after the World Cup, while stressing he would still think about his club future. He spoke of making many sacrifices over the past three or four years to reach this tournament. He turns 41 on 13 July.
Called up to support young Raúl Rangel, Ochoa has 153 caps, the third most in Mexico’s history. He made his professional debut in 2003 with Club América.
Now with AEL Limassol, his club career has taken in AC Ajaccio, Malaga and Standard de Liège, before a return to Club América from 2019 to 2022. Ochoa has played more than 1,000 professional matches.
