Guillermo Varela, at Flamengo since 2022, says he still has not grown used to the club’s intensity as pressure has spiked in 2026. According to Coluna Do Fla, the right-back reflected on Flamengo’s extremes across recent seasons.
On Sunday 8 March, Flamengo won the Campeonato Carioca by defeating Fluminense on penalties after a 0-0 draw in normal time.
Varela described Flamengo as wild in every respect, driven by a vast fanbase, and said events at the club keep taking him by surprise. He recalled a similar pattern in 2022 and added that he has learned to be ready for anything.
That echoed the swing from 2022 to 2023, when Flamengo claimed the Libertadores and Copa do Brasil, then stumbled early the next year with defeats in the Mundial, Recopa and Supercopa.
More recently, 2025 brought Libertadores and Brasileirão titles and a narrow world runners-up finish. In 2026, chants of “time sem vergonha” accompanied runners-up repeats in the Recopa and Supercopa, and the head coach was dismissed within the first quarter.
Varela and the supporters hope the state crown can spark further wins. Flamengo host Cruzeiro on Wednesday 11 in the fifth round of the Brasileirão, kicking off at 21:30 Brasília time at the Maracanã.
