Palmeiras beat Novorizontino 1-0 on Wednesday (4) at Arena Barueri, taking a first-leg lead in the 2026 Campeonato Paulista final and marking a notable milestone for captain Gustavo Gómez. According to Nosso Palestra, he also reached 362 appearances for the club, equalling former goalkeeper Marcos as the third most used player this century.
Early in the second half the defender headed on target from a corner, the goalkeeper parried and he scored the rebound, but after a VAR review the effort was ruled out for offside.
His outing took him to 16 finals with Palmeiras, matching Raphael Veiga for the most in the club’s history. Before this match Gómez had been level with Weverton on 15.
He has 12 trophies with the club, nine as captain, and could become the most decorated in Palmeiras history. He currently shares the record with Weverton, Marcos Rocha, Mayke, Dudu and former players Ademir da Guia and Junqueira. He is also the foreign player with the most Campeonato Brasileiro titles, with three.
The second leg is on Sunday (8) at 20:30 at Estádio Jorge Ismael de Biasi in Novo Horizonte. Grêmio Novorizontino have the competition’s best overall record, so host the return. Palmeiras need only a draw to secure the state title.
