Gustavo Gómez on Palmeiras defeat: ‘A leader can’t concede goals like this’

Palmeiras was defeated by Mirassol 2-1 in a match valid for the 33rd round of the Brazilian Championship, on Sunday night (9), away from home. After the match, defender Gustavo Gómez commented on the team's below-par performance, as they conceded one of the goals in the very first minute of the game.

– Physically, our team was below par. We conceded an early goal, now we have to correct our mistakes, the leader of the championship cannot concede a goal like that. Football is like this, we are still leaders, but we have to work to always improve.

The Paraguayan, who will play for the Paraguay national team during this FIFA Date and will therefore be absent for Verdão against Santos in a postponed match from the first round, also spoke about supporting the team from afar.

– This has always happened (missing the team during FIFA Dates). We have to respect the FIFA Date. I think we players don't decide this, so we just have to do our job with the national team and represent our country.

– Other people make that decision. We have a good squad to play. We have to improve and go into the next game thinking about the three points.

Even with the defeat, Palmeiras remains at the top of the Brasileirão. Abel Ferreira's team is stuck at 68 points, saw Flamengo draw level on points, but stays in first place by having one more win than the team from Rio.

Palmeiras returns to the field next Saturday (15), when Verdão faces Santos at Vila Belmiro, at 9 p.m. (Brasília time) in a postponed match from the 13th round of the Brazilian Championship.
