According to Globo.com, Palmeiras captain Gustavo Gómez escapes to his farm, Cabaña La Glória, in San Juan Bautista, Misiones, about 200km from Asunción, to reconnect with his roots. The property, bought six years ago, centres on a fishing lake and is where he unwinds with family and friends.

His sister, Mariela Gómez, opened the doors to show the living room lined with his photos, a small grass pitch, a sand volleyball court and the wooden bridge over the water where he lingers on holiday.

She said he loves to fish there, to relax and listen to music, and that it remains his favourite spot.

Gómez last visited during the World Cup break. With a Libertadores last 16 meeting against Cerro Porteño in Asunción, he plans only to see relatives in the capital before flying back to Brazil straight after, noting the schedule makes trips to the farm difficult and that he would live there if he could.

There is no sign of a goodbye, with a contract extension lined up to keep him at Palmeiras until at least 2030. Mariela added that he has been looking to renew and that the club feels like family.

Now 33, Gómez became the most decorated player in the club’s history at the start of the season. In June he led Paraguay to the World Cup last 16 after 16 years away, knocking out Germany on penalties in the round of 32.
