Chemsdine Talbi’s World Cup outing for Morocco sparked a playful exchange during BBC World Cup commentary as Guy Mowbray nudged Alan Shearer into praising Sunderland in the Group C clash with Brazil.

Talbi came on in the second half. Sunderland Echo highlights that the winger has enjoyed an impressive first season on Wearside following the club’s return to the Premier League.

He contributed to Régis Le Bris’s memorable campaign, with Sunderland finishing seventh to qualify for Europe. Talbi also etched himself into recent Wearside folklore by equalising at St James’ Park in the victory over Newcastle United.

His appearance prompted Mowbray to flag Sunderland’s strong World Cup presence, noting the Black Cats have 12 players involved, two more than the Real Madrid contingent.

Shearer joked that Mowbray sounded like a Sunderland fan, and the commentator replied he was simply teeing up the North East context. The exchange ended with Shearer acknowledging Sunderland had a great season, a point Mowbray said did not require gritted teeth.
