Marcus Tavernier slotted the visitors ahead shortly before the half-hour mark against the run of play.

Maresca’s side remained calm and continued to dominate possession, but were met by a resolute Bournemouth backline.

After 84 minutes, substitute Rayan Cherki’s corner was met by the head of Marc Guéhi to level the encounter.

Then, in the first minute of stoppage time, the magical Cherki was the provider again, poking the ball through expertly for Gvardiol to slot into the corner and snatch all three points at the Etihad Stadium.

“Everyone is proud in the moment, it’s the opening game of the season and we know how important it is, especially with all the changes we’ve had in the previous weeks,” began Gvardiol in his interview after the game.

“We need to enjoy this, we deserve it and I’m happy with the three points.

“To be fair, I was quite sure I was onside, but it’s difficult, in that moment you are just waiting to see the referee’s reaction.

“I am glad in the end it’s a goal.”

The victory preserves our 100% home winning record in the Premier League against the Cherries and also means we’ve now won our opening game in 15 of the last 16 seasons.

Our Croatian defender stressed the importance of starting the campaign with a win.

“Every game is important, especially here in England,” he continued.

“I would say the most important thing is that we won today.

“There is another game, Crystal Palace away, which is going to be difficult as well.”
