GYM trio notch longest starting run for Corinthians, but fall to Ceará

Last Sunday, Corinthians was defeated by Ceará 1-0 in another round of the Brasileirão. Dorival Júnior had his main attacking players available, and for the fifth consecutive time, Rodrigo Garro, Yuri Alberto, and Memphis formed the starting trio. This marks the longest sequence for the GYM trio since the Dutch striker's arrival at Parque São Jorge.

In total, Corinthians has fielded the three athletes together in 24 matches, accumulating 16 wins, four draws, and four losses. In these matches, the trio was responsible for 31 goals and provided 18 assists. Before this current series, the longest sequence had been four consecutive games, never reaching five.

The current sequence includes the defeat to Ceará, the 2-1 loss to Red Bull Bragantino, and three consecutive victories: 2-0 over Grêmio, and 1-0 against Vitória and Atlético Mineiro. The previous series happened at the end of last year, with four consecutive matches for the trio: a draw against Racing in the return leg of the Copa do Brasil semifinal, and victories over Palmeiras, Vitória, and Cruzeiro in the Brasileirão.

During Ramón Díaz's time, Garro, Yuri Alberto, and Memphis were regular starters. The only exceptions were Copa do Brasil games, when Memphis was not registered, and matches with occasional absences, such as the Dutchman's suspension in the 3-1 victory over Vasco. This year, the idea was to repeat the same pattern, but injuries prevented a complete sequence of performances.

Rodrigo Garro, for instance, started the season with knee problems and, after the Paulista title, had to step away to treat patellar tendinopathy; later, he also suffered a calf injury. Yuri Alberto fractured the first vertebra of the lumbar spine in May and underwent surgery to correct an inguinal hernia in August. Memphis, in turn, had thigh injuries: traumas during the Paulistão, a grade 2 injury in August, and an edema in September.

The fans' expectation was that, fully recovered, the three could play together and maintain the good numbers of the team led by Dorival Júnior. The sequence of matches began, but the team’s performance declined. The defeat to Ceará marked the first setback for the GYM trio playing at Neo Química Arena.

It is worth noting that the series is unlikely to continue in the next round. Rodrigo Garro received his third yellow card against Ceará, and even if Memphis is available after the Netherlands' commitments in the FIFA Date, without Garro, the trio will not be able to reunite for the classic on the 20th, precisely the next game of the season.
