Viktor Gyokeres scored twice for Arsenal as they extended their lead at the top of the table to nine points, for the time being at least, with a 3-0 win over Sunderland.

The Swedish striker has had an up and down debut season with the Gunners following his summer move from Sporting CP, but is starting to deliver more consistently on the £64m Arsenal splashed out on him.

His double extended his goal tally to eight for the season in the Premier League, and 13 in all competitions. He has also scored four goals in his last four games in all competitions.

But it was another of Arsenal’s summer signings that gave them the lead against the Black Cats, when Martin Zubimendi smashed an effort in off the post before the break.

Then it was all about Gyokeres. The forward was introduced as a substitute on the hour mark, having been left on the bench in favour of Gabriel Jesus, and doubled his side’s lead six minutes later when he fired into the corner from Kai Havertz’ cut-back.

He got his second in the 93rd minute, poking in after a great run and pass by Gabriel Martinelli to put Arsenal nine points clear ahead of Manchester City’s huge clash with Liverpool on Sunday.
