Manchester City won their fourth match in the Premier League, making it four out of four, after beating Brentford 2-1 with a brace from Erling Haaland.

Brentford took the lead at the Etihad after 22 seconds with a goal by Yoane Wissa, but Haaland equalised in the 19th minute before scoring the decisive goal in the 32nd minute.

Former captain Ilkay Gundogan also made his first start since returning to the club from Barcelona under new captain Kyle Walker.

Manchester City, who left the field with a 2-1 victory, increased their points to 12, while Brentford, who suffered their second defeat, remained on six points. City’s closest rivals for now are Arsenal and Newcastle United who sit on 10 points.

Haaland Chasing New Records

Erling Haaland has scored nine goals in four games in the Premier League this season.

The Norwegian forward, who scored in the first match of the season away to Chelsea, scored hat-tricks in the games against Ipswich Town and West Ham United.

With his two goals in Saturday’s game against Brentford, Haaland became the first player in Premier League history to score nine goals in his first four games. The player with the most goals after four games was Wayne Rooney with eight.

And, of course, the Player of the Match was Haaland. I think we can skip the explanation here, right?

Thoughts After the Match

Manager Pep Guardiola: “I do not remember in eight, nine years a team that played like Brentford in the first 30 minutes. We were not our best and they deserve to be 0-2. Every time they had the ball they create the chance. Long balls, win duels, short passes break the lines. Extraordinary team, we have suffered since they were promoted, all the games against Thomas have been difficult. They were really good and we were lucky. Second half was our best and we created a lot of chances and we could score more.”

Jack Grealish: “It is unbelievable. Nine now this season, I think that is more than my best tally I have had in the Premier League, and he [Haaland] has done it after four games. He is an unbelievable player, an unbelievable person. He gets everything he deserves because he works so hard on and off the pitch. He is just an absolute machine in front of goal and I cannot speak highly enough of him.”
