Jamie Carragher believes Manchester City striker Erling Haaland is the greatest goalscorer English football has ever seen.
Haaland scored the winner as City claimed a 1-0 win at Brentford on Sunday, his ninth goal in just seven Premier League games this season. The Norwegian has netted 18 goals in all competitions for club and country in 2025/26, in just 11 games.
At just 25, Haaland is already Norway’s record scorer and has risen to ninth among the all-time leading scorers in the European Cup/Champions League. He’s also just six goals from reaching 100 in the Premier League, and has 20 games to break Alan Shearer’s record as the fastest to reach a century in the division.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher believes Haaland is unlike anything we have previously seen in the English game.
“He can achieve whatever he wants. He will break every record we’ve got in this country about goalscoring, if he stays here for the length of his contract. I think he’s got another eight or nine years left,” Carragher said to Sky Sports.
“When I was watching him today and the start he’s made to this season, the way he’s started this season. I think we’re watching the greatest goalscorer to ever play in English football. I obviously cannot remember Jimmy Greaves and Dixie Dean, and all these players from years ago.
“But I think of Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, Harry Kane, Ian Rush, the great goalscorers. There’s a difference, for me, from a great centre-forward and a great goalscorer. I think what we’re witnessing now is something we’ve never seen before in our game.
“Don’t forget, this is a club whose goalscorer beforehand was Sergio Aguero, one of the greatest we’ve ever seen. This is on a completely different level to Aguero. He’s the best.”
