Stade Rennais manager Habib Beye has admitted he came close to being dismissed from his post, revealing that his stay at the club “continues for a very specific reason,” at a press conference before facing a final ultimatum in the Breton club’s midweek fixture against Toulouse. “The most important thing is to stay focused on the match in Toulouse,” said the former Red Star coach at a press conference transcribed by RMC Sport. “We have the chance to bounce back very quickly. It will be a difficult game, but we need to win.”Asked whether the fixture represented an ultimatum for his job, Beye replied “In our line of work, I don’t see it that way. The question [of my dismissal] was raised at one point. It was stopped. Today, there are still people who believe in what we want to build at Stade Rennais.”“Let’s not play a game of dupes. You’ve all seen the reports. We were meant to stop. It continues. It continues for a very specific reason — the management felt I had the energy and the ability to make this team win tomorrow.”Beye’s side currently sit 10th in Ligue 1 have not won any of their last five matches, and could go six games without a win in the top-flight for the first time since January-March 2021.
