PSG set the European standard and FC Bayern’s desire to triumph in the premier class is growing. Didi Hamann, however, sees a key personnel issue concerning a prominent Bayern star
After Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League victory last Saturday in a penalty shoot-out against Arsenal in Budapest, the media and experts are asking themselves what the Munich team still needs to take the final step despite a strong season. PSG defended the title after Luis Enrique’s team had beaten Inter Milan 5-0 in Munich last year. For Bayern, looking at Paris thus becomes a check of their own statics
Money continues to play a major role in Paris because the club has enormous opportunities thanks to support from Qatar and can more easily cope with bad purchases. However, the decisive factor is the development since Enrique’s arrival in the summer of 2023. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told Absolut Bayern that PSG only really became successful „when they went from being an expensive star ensemble to a real team“. With Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappé, the international title had previously eluded them
The squad work is also cited as a difference, with Joao Neves costing €66 million, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia €80 million, Desire Doue €50 million and Vitinha arriving from Porto for €41.5 million in 2022. Under Luis Campos, PSG have relied heavily on performance-related contracts since the summer of 2022, while Max Eberl at Bayern has been described as too lenient in negotiations with Alphonso Davies, Jamal Musiala and Dayot Upamecano. Andreas Herzog said: „In my opinion, Vitinha and Neves are a shade better than Kimmich and Pavlovic in possession. They are a touch calmer and more secure on the ball.“

TV pundit Didi Hamann is particularly clear with regard to Joshua Kimmich: „In my opinion, Kimmich is simply not a central midfielder. There are reasons why both the German and the current England national team coach, Thomas Tuchel, see him at right-back. You need people who anticipate in the six.“ He is not just questioning an individual position, but the protection in front of the defence
Hamann describes the missing type of player as „Rodri three years ago“ and explains: „Someone who directs and organizes the game, someone who gives the central defence protection and gives the attack the freedom to lose the ball from time to time.“ His criticism is therefore aimed at the link between midfield, central defence and attack
Under Vincent Kompany, no clear boss has yet emerged in central defence. At PSG, Marquinhos fulfils this role, as Hamann emphasises: „An absolute fighter who has the whole team under control. He stands at the back like the Eiffel Tower. That makes my heart beat faster. He makes his teammates better, that’s leadership. Tah and Upamecano first have to prove whether they are capable of doing the same. In general, I wonder whether Bayern have enough people to make their colleagues better.“
