Hamburg striker Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer’s teammates and coach were quick to take up cudgels for the 24-year-old after he scored what would prove the match-winner in HSV’s latest Bundesliga victory. On Tuesday, the player himself took his turn at his critics in an interview with the Hamburger Abendblatt. The Berlin native spoke on a variety of topics.
The Berlin-native – who sits on an expiring contract – has had his opportunities to depart his current Bundesliga club. Königsdörffer himself nixed a move to OGC Nice this summer. During the recent January transfer window, both Königsdörffer and the club felt as if a €4m offer from Middlesbrough wasn’t good enough. The six-times-capped Ghanian international nevertheless remained noncommittal about what would come next; absent a focus on better play.
“Of course, it helps that some of the focus and pressure has been taken off me,” Königsdörffer told the Abendblatt. “[Right now], I just want to score more goals. I’m not satisfied with only two goals. I have to take a closer look at my chances [and improve].
“I was willing to move after last season,” Königsdörffer continued, “But I can also imagine staying here. I don’t know at the moment. Everything is open.“
“I’ve received a lot of hate,” Königsdörffer said. “But I don’t really give a shit. I’m not that interested in it. What’s important to me are the people close to me, the coaches, the team, my advisors, my family, and my friends.“
The former Hertha BSC academy man prepares to potentially start against one of the clubs from his hometown on Saturday. Though Königsdörffer (who grew up in Moabit and Charlottenburg) has no real connection to Köpenick and 1. FC Union Berlin, he will be squaring off against former coach Steffen Baumgart.
Königsdörffer made clear he looked forward to facing his former HSV coach. Despite the fact that current HSV coach Merlin Polzin has plenty of other options in attack, Königsdörffer will likely be in line for his fifth consecutive start.
“I like Baumi,” Königsdörffer said. “I have a good relationship with him. [At the beginning of last month], I wished him a happy birthday.“
