The Football Association (FA) have officially charged former Manchester United and Burnley midfielder Hannibal Mejbri with misconduct.
Last month, Mejbri was accused of spitting towards Leeds United supporters during a clash between the Yorkshire outfit and Burnley at Turf Moor.
Burnley won the contest 2-0.
The incident appeared to take place while Mejbri was warming up in readiness to be thrust into the action. Scott Parker brought him on as a substitute in the 83rd minute.
When the allegation was made, Lancashire Police confirmed that they had launched an investigation. Burnley also acknowledged they were aware of the matter and were working with the authorities to establish exactly what had happened.
Leeds declined to issue a comment.
Now, the FA have announced that they have charged Mejbri with misconduct.
On Tuesday, the FA released a statement which read, “”Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri has been charged with misconduct following their Premier League fixture against Leeds United on Saturday 18 October.”
“It’s alleged that the player acted in breach of the Laws of the Game and/or in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or indecent behaviour by spitting at or in the direction of Leeds United supporters around the 67th minute.”
“Hannibal Mejbri has until Friday 28 November to provide a response.”
The Tunisia international spent five years at Old, progressing from the youth academy to the senior team. He made a handful of appearances for the senior side before his permanent departure in the summer of 2024. United snapped him from AS Monaco in a deal worth around €5m.
Mejbri turned out 13 times for United since making his debut in May 2021.
