Hannover are approaching the season calm but expectant. There’s a growing sense of belief that this could be the year they finally return to the Bundesliga after a six-year absence, with many tipping them to be serious promotion contenders.
The optimism stems in large part from the arrival of new head coach Christian Titz, who joined from FC Magdeburg at the end of last season. Having earned plaudits for his intense, attacking style of football, Titz brings a fresh tactical vision that Hannover fans are eager to see in action.
The club has been very active in the transfer market, bringing in 16 new signings during what is being hailed as a crucial and exciting summer. Notable arrivals include Nahuel Noll, Benjamin Källman, Mustapha Bundu, and Daisuke Yokota, all of whom strengthen an already well-balanced squad.
Defender Boris Tomiak captured the mood ahead of the season opener: “We have extremely high potential and a great deal of quality in the squad." he said, while also acknowledging the challenge posed by their opponents: “They’ve put together a really good team; I think they’re even stronger than last year. They won’t back down in the duels - things will definitely get intense. We have to hold our own.”
Hannover enter the match following a mixed pre-season, recording three wins, two losses, and a draw. Their final warm-up ended on a high with a 2-0 victory over Serie A side Cagliari.
Team News:
Newly named captain Enzo Leopold has been passed fit despite taking a knock in training midweek. However, Daisuke Yokota will miss out due to injury.
Like Hannover, Kaiserslautern are also dreaming of promotion after a promising - though ultimately frustrating - campaign last season, which ended with a 7th-place finish. The appointment of Torsten Lieberknecht in April didn’t immediately spark the turnaround the club hoped for, but there is belief that with a full pre-season under his belt, he can now get the best out of this squad.
Lieberknecht has recently outlined his long term vision for the club: “Yes. When we talk about continuity, I would like to hold the coaching position at Betzenberg for the long term. And create an identity. I don’t even want to mention promoting youth as a goal, because that’s a given for me. If I had one big wish, it would be this: That we become number one in youth football in the Southwest again.” An exciting sign of things to come for the fans, who may see more homegrown talent integrated into the first team this season.
Recruitment has been steady, with Fabian Kunze, Simon Asta, Maxwell Gyamfi, and Mahir Emreli all arriving on free transfers - sensible business as the club adjusts to the recent departures. The biggest challenge will be replacing top scorer Ragnar Ache, who joined FC Köln. It will take a collective effort to fill the void left by his physical presence and consistent goal output.
After picking up just one point from two meetings with Hannover last season, Kaiserslautern will be determined to set the record straight with the early opportunity presented to them this weekend.
Team News:
Lieberknecht has almost a full squad available, with only midfielder Frank Ronstadt confirmed to miss out due to injury.
Hannover (3-4-2-1):
Noll (GK) - Ghiță, Tomiak, Okon - Matsuda, Leopold, Taïbi, Neubauer - Bundu, Chakroun - Pichler
Nahuel Noll is expected to get the nod in goal over returning veteran Ron-Robert Zieler. Waniss Taïbi and Mustapha Bundu are both likely to debut, while Ime Okon may also feature after two full 90-minute outings in pre-season friendlies.
Kaiserslautern (3-4-1-2):
Krahl (GK) - Heuer, Sirch, Elvedi - Asta, Kunze, Şahin, Kleinhansl - Ritter - Hanslik, Emreli
There is still debate around whether new signing Kim Ji-Soo will be thrown straight into the starting XI. If so, either Luca Sirch or Jan Elvedi could make way. Florian Kleinhansl is expected to continue on the left, while summer arrival Mahir Emreli is likely to lead the line alongside Daniel Hanslik.
