Hansi Flick defends under-fire Barcelona star after latest win | OneFootball

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has on Sunday moved to defend a member of his backline.

The player in question? Gerard Martín.

Stopper Martín was for his part in from the off once more this evening, as Barcelona marked their return to action in a La Liga meeting with Real Sociedad.

When all was said and done, the Blaugrana emerged on the right side of a 2-1 result, to keep alive a fine stretch of form since the international break.

Along the way, however, the aforementioned Martín was subjected to heavy criticism.

This came chiefly owing to his role in Real Sociedad’s opener, as Álvaro Odriozola broke free to slot home at the back post.

Speaking to the media on the back of the full-time whistle at Montjuïc, Hansi Flick therefore made a point of heaping praise on his left-back, explaining:

“Two seasons ago, when Gerard Martín was playing for Barça B, we could see his abilities. With his hard work and wonderful mentality, he is an amazing player.

“Gerard never disappoints, always giving his all on the pitch, and playing more minutes helps him even more, as does playing in big matches.”
