Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo finds himself at the centre of the exit speculations in the ongoing January transfer window.

The 25-year-old recently made his comeback after spending close to five months out on the sidelines due to an injury he sustained last summer.

However, with Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez establishing themselves as the first-choice centre-back pairing, coupled with contract negotiations not progressing as expected, the Uruguayan’s future has been called into question.

Juventus, for one, are pushing hard to acquire Araujo’s services and have even had a proposal turned down by Barcelona already.

Hansi Flick on Araujo’s future

Amidst the growing speculations about Araujo, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has praised the captain as one of the best in his position and played down the rumours of his potential departure.

Speaking ahead of the Super Cup final against Real Madrid tomorrow, Flick said the following about Araujo’s situation (h/t AS):

“There have always been rumours since I’ve been here. We have to be professional. Ronald is coming back from a tough injury and we have to look after him. He is back and he is very professional.”

Confirming his desire to retain the 25-year-old centre-back, Flick added: “It’s not my job to talk about it, but I want him in my team. He is one of the best defenders.”

While Flick maintains the intention to keep hold of Araujo, the club might see things differently, especially if a renewal agreement is not closed.

Reports claim that as things stand the Uruguayan could be ‘more out than in’ at Barcelona, with the feeling inside the dressing room also suggesting that the 25-year-old could be on the move.

With Juventus expected to keep pushing for Araujo this month, it remains to be seen how things pan out for him.
