It has been some days since the Christmas holidays of FC Barcelona players have concluded, and the team is now prepared to play its first game of 2026, the derby against RCD Espanyol, which is scheduled for tonight.
The team held its final training session ahead of this game yesterday, after which Hansi Flick addressed the press. Mundo Deportivo has reported some of the main highlights from the German manager’s press conference.
The Barcelona coach started by wishing everyone present a happy new year, and previewing the upcoming game:
“First of all, happy new year. It will be an interesting match. I want to congratulate Manolo because what he’s doing is incredible. They’ve won five games in a row — that’s fantastic. They’re pressing very well, also in transitions. We’ll have to take care and play at our best level — that’s the most important thing.”
Flick also highlighted how Espanyol have improved over the last year:
“Last season wasn’t easy either. This year, they’re confident, they press well, and we’ll see what happens. We have to stay calm and play our best football. In the end, I think we have a lot of quality to win there.”
The German coach was sure the goalkeeper Joan Garcia would once again showcase his abilities tomorrow:
“I don’t see any differences compared to recent weeks. It will be an important match. He’s been with Dela, with whom he has a good relationship. He has confidence and believes in his strengths and quality — that’s what he wants to show tomorrow.”
The Barcelona coach revealed that both Dani Olmo and Lamine Yamal are ready to play:
“Yes, they’re ready. Dani played in the small game today; he’s not afraid in one-on-one situations. He’s taken an important step forward. Lamine is also back.”
More than the opponents, Hansi Flick wanted his team to focus on itself and remain united:
“The most important thing in football is to support your team, not go against the other. That’s what’s best for your team. Everyone should send positive energy. You have to focus on your team, not the other.”
More notably, the German coach expressed his desire for another defender:
“Difficult question. We’re not ready yet. When you look at the back line, with centre-backs and full-backs, we need one more player. But we have to discuss it, and it’s not easy to bring in a high-level player in the winter market. I trust we’ll be able to do something, but it has to make sense.”
When asked about Ronald Araujo, Hansi Flick did not give a clear answer:
“It depends on him. He’s not 100% physically, but he’s fine. He has to decide how quickly he wants to go. For me, it’s clear. What I see and feel is that the team’s support is fantastic. He’s taken the time he needed. He’s on the right path.”
For the new year, the Barcelona coach only wanted his team to continue working hard:
“For me, the most important thing is to train as we’ve done over the last two weeks. With quality, high intensity, and full focus. That’s how you improve; there’s a lot of potential in the team. I wish all the players stay healthy. We’ve already had many injuries, that’s enough for this season.”
The German coach also expressed his happiness with how Eric Garcia performs in the midfield:
“We’ll see tomorrow, he’s doing great. With ‘Cuba’ and Gerard, the triangle gives us stability. Also, Jules and Balde.”
When asked about the possibility of a hostile reception for Joan Garcia at the Cornella, Flick had the following to say:
“I don’t know. I’m positive. We are people, and we have to live together. Respect is the most important thing in football. I think we all have to be on the same page.”
The Barcelona coach once again reiterated his happiness on being at the Catalan club:
“I’ve learned a lot over the past year and a half. I love Barcelona’s mentality. I love living here. I have a fantastic staff. The players are phenomenal. All the club employees help us a lot — the communications team, the directors, Deco and Bojan… we want to give our best to our fans. I feel it every day. I really appreciate what exists here at this club. I will give my best for this club.”
The German coach ended his presser with another statement on Joan Garcia:
“As I see it, he’s always focused. He’s had a fantastic half-season and shown why his decision was the right one. He’s at a top level and is our number one. I have no concerns at all.”
There is no doubt that tonight’s game will be a very special one for Joan Garcia, and it is good to see Hansi Flick supporting his player before such an important game. Hopefully, Barcelona will be able to get the full three points and start the year on a positive note.
