Hansi Flick talks Yamal, Rodri, Bernal, Fermin, Olmo after Valencia 0-5 Barcelona

FC Barcelona put in another convincing performance as they beat Valencia 5-0 in their fourth game of the new season. Despite playing away from home, the Catalans clearly showcased their superiority on the pitch and dominated their opponents for the entirety of the game.

Hansi Flick was naturally very happy with the result and the performance from his team. As Mundo Deportivo has noted, he commented on this game in his post-match press conference, and highlighted the contributions of some players in particular.

The German coach started by commenting on the match, and highlighted that it was almost a perfect game:

“It was a fantastic match, controlled from the start. We dominated, and that is what I want to see. I’m not surprised by what we have done because it reflects the quality with which you train. It was an almost perfect match. You have to control the game and attack the spaces to try to score. That is what we tried to do.”

However, the Barcelona coach did not dwell too much on the good scoring record of his team, which has scored 17 goals in four games, and remained concerned only with the points:

“For me, it’s just the three points, but we have quality on the pitch, there are spaces and we can attack well against low blocks. It is good to see, and we were able to control the game, especially in this temperature (34°C). We are happy. It doesn’t change our idea. We need a ‘9’. I’m happy that Pedri also scored. Everyone who plays on the pitch can score goals. We take advantage of the spaces and wait for our opportunities to score.”

Despite the good performances so far, Flick still urged caution going forward:

“The fans are with us. We play for them. We have made good signings, but the players are very hungry and young. This is only the beginning and it is a long journey.”

While happy with the performance, the German tactician asked for a bit more control from his team:

“I don’t know if it is necessary to say this after a 0-5 win, but we can always do better, and we have to try to control the game better with more passes. There are many matches, and we always have to manage our energy.”

The Barcelona trainer also praised Lamine Yamal for his commitment:

“Yesterday, he trained separately from the group, but this morning we spoke and he told me he could play. He was committed to the pressing and defensive work, very involved, and that is very good.”

Rodri Hernandez made his starting debut in this game, and while praising him, Flick also emphasised that Marc Bernal remains an option for him:

“Everything Rodri does makes sense. It is exciting. Not only on the pitch, but also in the dressing room. He is a true leader, and Marc Bernal is also doing a good job. He will have opportunities and will improve more and more thanks to this signing.”

The German coach also gave a positive assessment of Fermin Lopez, who again got on the scoresheet in this match:

“We see what kind of player he is from what he does inside and outside the box. He always presses, he does well with the ball and without it, and he scores goals. His strength is his intensity, although he makes some mistakes, but he is doing a fantastic job.”

Dani Olmo was another player who got praise from Flick for his contribution:

“There are many players who can play and I have to manage this. It is not easy for a player to be a substitute, but in football everything can change. I’m happy for Dani and for the way he came off the bench. He is very intelligent. We always try to make the best decisions for the team.”

Despite three of his players getting yellow cards, the German coach was happy with the referee’s performance:

“The first one, Cubarsí’s, he had to make that challenge. We have to accept it, and the referee (Díaz de Mera) had a great game.”

Following this memorable win, Barcelona are now set to start their UEFA Champions League campaign, with a match against Feyenoord on Wednesday. Hopefully, Hansi Flick will be able to keep up his good work, and ensure his team performs as well in the European competition as it has in the league so far.
