Barcelona’s win over Girona at the weekend required Hansi Flick to bring an unconventional substitute in Ronald Araujo to score the winner as the striker – a measure that worked out but shows how grave a situation the club is facing in terms of injuries.

There was hope that Ferran Torres would be available for the clash midweek against Olympiacos, but with both him and Raphinha still not training with the group, Flick has another big game to pass with a thin forward line.

Needless to say, the manager is experimenting with various formations to deploy on the night, and SPORT brings to light some of the interesting options.

Entry of the Swede

As relayed by the outlet in a recent report, the manager tested out a combination of Roony Bardghji, Marcus Rashford, and Lamine Yamal in training.

The development is not surprising considering how the Swedish star impressed coming off the bench in the last game.

If the manager does opt for such a setup, it will be Rashford who continues to operate as the central striker and Yamal on the right.

Bardghji, needless to say, will be the one forced to adjust in a relatively new position – the left wing.

While it could well be another test that does not make the real XI, such a formation would allow Flick to continue with a stable midfield of Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, and Fermin Lopez, and thus looks good on paper.

Some of the other options that the manager can consider include using Fermin Lopez on the left wing with the trio of Marc Casado, Pedri, and De Jong in midfield.

It is also a possibility that Bardghji features as the attacking midfielder behind the striker, with Fermin on the left and Pedri and De Jong serving as the double-pivot.

Needless to say, it will be interesting to see what dynamic the manager opts to utilise on Tuesday night in the UEFA Champions League after the latest experimentation.

Academy stars, including Toni Fernandez and Dro, are also strong candidates after all.
