One of the biggest surprises in Hansi Flick’s starting XI against Mallorca came at right-back, as the Barcelona manager left Jules Kounde on the bench for the entire match.

It was a notable move, considering the Frenchman had played 86 consecutive matches for the club, the third-longest streak in Barça’s history.

The second surprise was who replaced him. Rather than turning to Héctor Fort, the natural backup, Flick opted for Eric Garcia – a player who had not featured much in that position before.

Until now, Flick had largely used Garcia as a centre-back, his primary role, and occasionally as a defensive midfielder. Deploying him on the flank was, thus, unexpected, but as it would turn out, the decision ultimately proved to be a masterstroke.

Garcia delivers in unfamiliar role

Indeed, Garcia put in an outstanding performance as Barcelona’s starting right-back. Defensively solid, he held his ground against Mallorca’s pace on the wing.

On the ball, he was composed and reliable, offering a strong alternative to Ronald Araujo when it came to building from the back, an area where the Uruguayan is less comfortable.

Garcia even contributed going forward, providing the assist for Dani Olmo’s match-winning goal on the night.

An asset for Flick

The Spanish international’s versatility is becoming a valuable asset for Flick. In that sense, Garcia is beginning to resemble Sergi Roberto in his ability to fill multiple roles, even if not to the same extent.

Throughout this season, he has shown he can adapt effectively when called upon, earning the trust of the manager as a result.

In the winter transfer window, both Girona and Como were pushing hard to sign Garcia, but Flick any move. He spoke directly with the defender, assuring him he would have opportunities if he stayed – and he has kept that promise.

Now, with another strong performance under his belt in a completely new role, Eric is proving that he can be more than just a squad player. He is becoming one of Flick’s most versatile and dependable options – at centre-back, defensive midfield and even right-back.

So much so that, the German tactician is pushing Barcelona to renew the defender, whose contract expires in 2026.
