FC Barcelona were unable to add any major piece of silverware to their trophy cabinet in the last year and will be definitely looking to change their course this season under the supervision of Hansi Flick.
For this purpose, they have an opportunity waiting for them right around the corner, as they will be kicking off their Spanish Super Cup campaign in two days.
In this regard, SPORT notes that Flick will have a key player available, who had been key for his team’s triumph in this competition back in 2023, i.e., Gavi.
The 20-year-old La Masia graduate was at his best when FC Barcelona faced Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final at Riyadh in 2023. Barcelona won this game with a 3-1 scoreline, and Gavi was directly involved in all the three goals scored by his team.
He opened the score with a cross-shot after Dembele, Pedri, and Lewandowski combined to put him through on goal. Later, he took full advantage of a two-on-one situation in the Real Madrid area to find Robert Lewandowski, who scored the second goal for his team on the night.
Then, in the second half, he again assisted Pedri to take his side’s score to 3 on the night, which was enough for them to take hold of the final and to take the Spanish Super Cup with them back to Barcelona.

Gavi was then unable to participate in the 2024 edition of the competition, as he suffered a serious ACL tear in October 2023, and missed around 11 months of action. Barcelona and Real Madrid again faced off in the final at Riyadh that year, but without Gavi, the Blaugranes fell to a 4-1 defeat to the Merengues.
Now, having recovered from his injury, Gavi will once again be waiting to be unleashed in Saudi Arabia, especially if the two El Clasico rivals meet again in the final.
Flick understands that this competition holds a special place in Gavi’s heart, who is generally at his best level whenever he is facing Real Madrid, and thus will be looking forward to another special performance from him in a possible final encounter.
