Charisma, leadership, and quality in abundance: Lothar Matthäus remains one of Inter's brightest icons. The former German midfielder celebrates his 65th birthday today.
After arriving in Milano in the summer of 1988, Matthäus quickly established himself as a key figure in the squad, winning the hearts of Inter fans. Over four seasons, he made 153 appearances and scored 53 goals, many of them decisive in the team’s successes, including the record-breaking 1988/89 Scudetto, the 1989 Supercoppa Italiana, and the 1990/91 UEFA Cup.
Some of his signature highlights are unforgettable: the decisive free-kick against Napoli in the title race and the penalty in the first leg of the UEFA Cup final against Roma – moments that have become part of Inter’s collective memory. Capping off an extraordinary career, Matthäus won the Ballon d'Or in 1990 and was later inducted into the Inter's Hall of Fame.
Best wishes to Lothar Matthäus from FC Internazionale Milano and all the Nerazzurri fans.
