Spoils shared against First Vienna FC

FC Red Bull Salzburg Women 1-1 First Vienna FC (H/T:0-0). Goals: Grabovac (48') - Osl (57' pen)

In our final match of the year in the ADMIRAL Women's Bundesliga, our RBS women had the better chances, but thanks to a penalty save by goalkeeper Lara Ritter and the fact that First Vienna remained a constant threat on the counter-attack, a 1-1 draw was a fair result. It leaves our women in a proud fifth place going into the winter break.

Match summary

The Viennese team's late arrival due to heavy traffic meant a 17-minute delay to kick-off, leading to a slow start at the Red Bull Football Academy. However, after Hahn's pair of efforts came to nothing, Pavlovic's team took control around the half-hour mark. Emelie Kobler fired the first shot on goal from a low cross, and Sara Grabovac – from the edge of the box - plus Sophia Schirmbrand – with a free kick – both sent the ball just over the crossbar. Just before halftime, First Vienna midfielder Amuchie went down in the penalty area, and referee Asim Basic pointed to the spot. However, goalkeeper Lara Ritter saved the initial penalty, and Wasser also missed the rebound (45+1') – providing for a real morale boost before the half-time whistle!

Our team carried this momentum into the second half as Kobler set Grabovac free with a superb chip into her path. The 16-year-old held off her marker and expertly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner (48)!

In a similar way to the first half, Valentina Illinger (50') and Sara Grabovac (55') missed chances to extend the lead. Another penalty was awarded after a handball, and Osl converted confidently to level (57').

The match became increasingly disjointed as it progressed, with both teams having chances to win it in the closing stages. Vina Crnoja tested goalkeeper Piplits from distance, and while Höcherl lacked the necessary accuracy at the other end, and Sophia Schirmbrand cleared a Fankhauser lob at the last minute, Emelie Kobler and Theresa D’Angelo came very close to scoring in the final stages.

Ultimately, however, the match ended in a draw, a result that was probably deserved, allowing our FC Red Bull Salzburg Women to head into the winter break with their heads held high.

Views

We played a very solid game, especially in the second half, and were able to clearly demonstrate our improvement compared to the first meeting. First Vienna are a strong team technically and challenged us as expected. We could perhaps have won the game with a bit more clinical finishing, but overall we take plenty of positives from the match.
