Joshua Kimmich and FC Bayern just managed to snatch a 2-2 draw from Mainz 05. After the game, the midfielder praised his opponents as well as criticizing himself

FC Bayern were in the lead against Mainz 05 until shortly before half-time and looked set to record another comfortable home win. However, two headers then followed, which only prevented them from suffering their first Bundesliga defeat of the season thanks to Harry Kane’s penalty shortly before the end

Joshua Kimmich said on the DAZN microphone after the game: „We actually played a very good first half. That’s a bit of game management, we can’t let the result slip from our grasp. The fact that we got 1-1 after a set-piece just before the break is very, very annoying. That shouldn’t happen to us.“

Kimmich continued: „That’s the only reason why the second half was open. Otherwise it would have been much easier. It was a tough piece of work. Fortunately, we were able to equalise at the end.“

Kimmich praises Mainz

Despite the equaliser, Kimmich said Munich „didn’t want to change that much in the second half because I really thought the first half was decent. We were in absolute control and had some really good chances to score. The opposing goalkeeper made a couple of good saves. We actually wanted to continue that in the second half. We didn’t manage that so well at first.“

The 30-year-old analyzed that „from the 60th to 65th minute […] we became a bit more pressing again“. „That’s when the 2:1 happened. In the end, we’re happy that we took a point,“ he continued

Kimmich also thought that Mainz „did absolutely well“. „Nevertheless, the expectation is of course that you have to win at home – no matter who you play. Of course, Mainz were now in last place in the table, so the expectations were even higher,“ he nevertheless noted

However, „it’s not always that easy when the opponent defends so deep in a 5-4-1, with two such tight chains. It’s certainly not easy to have so many chances to score, but I think we had enough that we could have won the game,“ concluded Kimmich.
