‘Harder than they imagine – Deeney doubts Arteta can use Eze properly

Former Premier League striker Troy Deeney believes Mikel Arteta will struggle to fit Eberechi Eze into the starting lineup on a consistent basis this campaign. The England international was the seventh signing of what proved to be a busy transfer window for the Gunners. Arsenal secured his signature in spectacular fashion, beating Spurs after following him closely throughout the summer.

Eze’s best position sparks debate

Discussions on where Eze will fit into the Arsenal side have been ongoing even before his arrival. Primarily an attacking midfielder, the former QPR man is also capable of playing on the left flank or as a false nine, with his Arsenal debut coming from the left.

Troy Deeney believes Arteta will struggle to play him regularly due to what he describes as a rigid approach. Speaking on The Football Exchange podcast, Deeney stated: “Eze is fantastic. I think getting him in the team is going to be harder than they imagine because he’s too stuck and rigid in his ways Arteta.”

Arsenal must allow Eze freedom

Arteta’s pragmatic approach, especially in big games, has long been a source of criticism and scrutiny. That was evident for much of last season and is likely one of the reasons why Arsenal signed both Eze and Viktor Gyokeres this summer.

Eze is a player who offers something unique to Arsenal’s attack. He brings unpredictability to the frontline, but that will only be effective if he is given the freedom to play without restrictions. Gabriel Martinelli’s decline in recent years has been attributed by some to Arteta’s structured and meticulous approach, which appears to have stifled the Brazilian.

Whether on the left or in a more central role, Eze should be allowed to express himself and showcase his qualities.
