Sunderland Echo understands Sunderland have decided not to take up the one-year option on Harrison Jones’ contract, leaving the midfielder free to move on this summer.

Jones made his senior debut in August 2024, coming on for the final 20 minutes of a Carabao Cup first round defeat at then-Championship rivals Preston North End.

He also started in an FA Cup third round loss to Stoke City, a moment he later called a dream come true. He has since added six further first-team appearances, including two starts under Regis Le Bris during the final month of last season’s promotion push.

This season he has started only once, a Carabao Cup defeat against Huddersfield Town in August, although he was an unused substitute in 12 Premier League matches and on the bench for last month’s Tyne-Wear derby win at Newcastle.

A number of EFL clubs explored a January loan before an injury in a Premier League International Cup tie with Borussia Dortmund ended talks. Since returning, he has captained the Under-21s and scored an eye-catching free-kick in a 2-1 defeat to Derby County, with scouts present and interest from League One, League Two and the Scottish Premiership. At least five EFL sides and two clubs north of the border have already signalled a willingness to discuss a deal.
