Despite facing severe transfer restrictions amid their summer of turmoil under former owner Dejphon Chansiri, Amass joined Wednesday from United on a half-season loan on deadline day.

The deal was only given approval by the EFL after the Red Devils agreed to pay the entirety of Amass' wages during his time with the Owls, and in a further generous gesture to help out the troubled Championship club, they are even footing the bill for his accommodation costs.

With Wednesday sitting bottom of the table after having a total of 18 points deducted, it is fair to say it has been a challenging first loan move for Amass, but the 18-year-old has still managed to impress this season, scoring one goal and providing one assist in 17 appearances for Henrik Pedersen's side so far.

However, it remains to be seen whether the Owls will be able to keep hold of Amass for the rest of the season, and as the January window approaches, we rounded up the latest news on the defender's situation.

Henrik Pedersen issues clear Harry Amass, Sheffield Wednesday stance

It was claimed last month that United were planning to allow Amass to remain with Wednesday for the entire season, but with his loan deal set to expire, it now seems much less certain that he will see out of the campaign at Hillsborough.

While results are largely irrelevant as the Owls are certain to be relegated this season, Pedersen will not want his already threadbare squad to be depleted even further by Amass' exit, and he will be reluctant to lose one of the few shining lights from his side's nightmare campaign.

Speaking earlier this month, Pedersen revealed that discussions were taking place between the two clubs about a potential extension to Amass' loan, and he expressed his hope that a deal will be reached.

"There is contact between Sheffield Wednesday and Man United and I hope in the next one or two weeks we can come closer to something here," Pedersen told The Star.

"I think there is something between Manchester United and Harry that they have to find out before we can make the next step.

"I hope it will be found out in the short term. There could be something with the contract between Harry and Manchester United, but let’s see what happens. I think we will find a solution - I really hope."

Ruben Amorim drops surprise Harry Amass, Sheffield Wednesday claim as Man United decision looms

It is unclear at this point whether United will give the green light for Amass to stay at Wednesday for the season, but it seems head coach Ruben Amorim has not been too impressed by how his loan at Hillsborough has been going.

Amass has made seven senior appearances for the Red Devils so far, including some under Amorim last season, but, in what was a brutal criticism of some of the club's younger players, the 40-year-old appeared to take a swipe at how the defender has performed for the Owls when defending his decision not to select midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.

"In the end it's going to be the training, the games," Amorim said, as quoted by the BBC.

"Of course. he's not playing so many games, but Kobbie has had opportunities, especially last year. Everyone has.

"Amass is now struggling in Championship. Chido is not always a starter in the under 21s.

"All these guys played when a lot of people were saying: 'Sack the manager'. So, you can see that I'm not worried."

In response to those comments, Amass posted a photo of himself on Instagram holding Wednesday's November Player of the Month trophy, and while it was swiftly deleted, it did not go down well with Amorim, who hit out at what he described as a "feeling of entitlement" among some of the youngsters at Old Trafford.

It is possible that Amorim was referring to the Owls' situation rather than Amass' own individual performances, but either way, his words could have a big impact on the decision over his future.

Millwall and Stoke City keen on Harry Amass deal in January

While Amorim may not have approved of Amass' time at Wednesday, most would agree that he has proven himself at Championship level this season, and it seems his performances at Hillsborough have caught the eye of other clubs.

The BBC revealed earlier this month that, although the Owls would like to keep hold of Amass until the summer, there are "a number of options available" to the defender in January, with an alternative loan move or a possible permanent exit from Old Trafford on the cards.

It has since been claimed by the Daily Mail that Championship promotion hopefuls Millwall and Stoke City are both interested in Amass, and the latter could soon be in need of a new left-back amid reports that Eric Bocat is on the radar of Belgian side Standard Liege.

Despite both experiencing poor runs of form of late, the Lions currently sit sixth in the table, while the Potters are eighth, with the pair just seven and nine points from the automatic promotion spots respectively, so a move to either club would certainly give Amass a better chance of tasting success this season.
