Manchester United prioritised a loan move for Harry Amass over the summer because it was felt like it would be the best step for his development after his ascension into the first-team squad under Ruben Amorim last season.
Sheffield Wednesday – a club with a strong track record of developing young players and a manager who plays a three-man defensive system – were identified as the perfect landing spot for the 18-year-old fullback.
The Red Devils were so keen for Amass to join the Championship side they did not ask for a loan fee to complete the deal, while agreeing to provide complete coverage of his wage packet at Old Trafford.
And it’s precisely because of this well-intentioned plan that the news Wednesday had been plunged into administration last week may have caused concern amongst United’s hierarchy with the Owls being hit with a 12-point deduction.
But, according to a well-placed source, there is zero need for any worry at the Theatre of Dreams about their defensive starlet in Hillsborough.
The Daily Mail details a source who states Amass is thoroughly enjoying his time with his adopted side and has already formed close bonds in the dressing room.
“He’s absolutely loving life. He’s struck up a close connection with (captain) Barry Bannan and he feels a big part of the team. He’s loving it,” the source reveals.
Since arriving in Sheffield, Amass has played every minute Wednesday’s campaign after making his debut against Bristol City.
The fullback scored an own goal in the sixth minute as Henrik Pedersen’s side lost 3-0. However, he played well beyond this unfortunate start and has clearly won the trust of his new manager – as well as the adoration of his new fanbase.
From the outside looking in, a club being placed in administration feels like a doomsday scenario. But the situation under chairman Dejphon Chansiri had become so desperate that there is a feeling of optimism at the development.
Scottish midfielder Bannan, the club captain, admitted it was a “huge relief” as Chansiri’s ownership had been brought to an end, despite Wednesday being languished at the bottom of the Championship table on minus six points – and 16 from safety.
But if the Owls are to pull off a sensational push to avoid relegation in such difficult circumstances, their loanee from United is sure to play a key role in propelling them to safety.
