England national team captain Harry Kane closes in on Robert Lewandowski’s single season Bundesliga goal-scoring record. With 30 goals through 24 Bundesliga matchdays, Kane appears almost certain to break Lewandowski’s mark of 41 league goals during the 2020/21 campaign. Barring unforeseen injury, Kane should easily eclipse it.
In Saturday evening’s league victory over Dortmund – a result that practically guarantees Kane his second consecutive Bundesliga title – Kane demonstrated why 11 goals in the ten remaining matchdays should prove no significant problem for him. Kane once again bagged a brace. The 32-year-old’s fourth consecutive league brace places him in historic company.
Lothar Emmerich (Dortmund, 1967) and Tomislav Maric (Wolfsburg, 2001) are the only other two Bundesliga players to have accomplished that feat. Whether Kane ends up becoming the first Bundesliga player to record five consecutive league braces remains to be seen. If not, Kane’s 45 goals in 37 competitive appearances this year are certainly impressive enough.
“Of course, I’ll try to keep going and do as I do,” Kane told Sky Germany after last night’s win. “I know that questions about the record will almost certainly come up after every game now, but there are still a lot of games to go. I’ll just try to stay consistent and then we’ll see if it’s possible in the end. Right now, it’s definitely looking good.”
