Manchester United’s pursuit of long-term target Harry Kane may have just taken a complicated turn. The Red Devils broke the bank last summer to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig.
The Slovenian arrived as a replacement for Rasmus Hojlund, who moved to Napoli on loan and has since signed permanently with the Serie A club. Sesko, meanwhile, enjoyed a decent debut campaign at Old Trafford, finishing as United’s joint top scorer with 12 goals in all competitions.
However, the Slovenian picked up an injury in the final weeks of the campaign and did not feature in pre-season. With Joshua Zirkzee’s future also unclear and a lack of proper backup in the squad, the situation has added to concern among fans.
One candidate who remains linked with the Red Devils and is perhaps the perfect candidate to lead the line at Old Trafford is Kane.
Kane moved to Bayern Munich from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2023, when United signed Hojlund. The Englishman has since won the Bundesliga twice as well as the DFB Pokal and the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, registering 146 goals and 33 assists in 147 games.
Kane’s run in Germany has only added to his reputation as one of the world’s best strikers, but he also had a fantastic record in the Premier League. The Englishman rose through the ranks at Spurs before breaking into the senior side in 2013.
He went on to register 280 goals and 63 assists in 435 appearances across competitions for the north London side.
Kane has found the back of the net 213 times in the Premier League, with only Alan Shearer (260) managing more goals in the English top flight. United have had their eyes on the 33 year old for ages, as his credentials match the profile of the fearsome strikers the club has housed in the past.
It was also believed that the lure of breaking Shearer’s all-time Premier League goalscoring record would be enough to entice Kane to embrace a move to Old Trafford. The Bayern Munich striker has now shared his views on a possible return to the Premier League.
Speaking to journalist Henry Winter, as cited by Fabrizio Romano, Kane revealed that he is no longer desperate to return to the Premier League. He said: “When I first left, for sure it was something that I thought I’d definitely be coming back. That itch isn’t there as much anymore. I’m extremely happy here in Munich.”
Kane’s contract at the Allianz Arena expires next summer, but previous reports suggest that he is likely to extend his stay at the club.
Kane will turn 34 next summer, which could be a factor if United consider a move for him in 2027. However, the Englishman has displayed no signs of slowing down, so perhaps a return to the Premier League cannot be entirely ruled out yet.
