Manchester United defender Harry Maguire achieved a special career feat in the club’s 2-1 victory against Brentford on Monday evening.
Michael Carrick’s appointment as the temporary replacement for Ruben Amorim has elevated Maguire to become one of United’s most important players.
He has started every game under Carrick that he has been available for. Having been suspended for the Leeds and Chelsea matches, Maguire made his return to the starting XI vs. Brentford. He partnered Ayden Heaven, forming a superb duo that was crucial to securing all three points.
Beyond his assist for Casemiro’s opening goal, Maguire contributed eight clearances, three recoveries and blocked one shot.
He also won all four ground duels that he delved into and lost just one of the six that he vied for in the air.
The England international recently put pen to paper on a contract extension with the Red Devils and he is certainly showing no signs of slowing down.
Maguire undoubtedly has one eye on being a mainstay for the Three Lions during this summer’s World Cup.
United have confirmed that Maguire’s appearance against Keith Andrews’ men marked the 600th of his professional career.
Maguire broke into the Sheffield United first team before he moved to Hull City and stepped up to the Premier League in 2014/15.
He then spent a loan spell in the Championship with Wigan Athletic before going on to become a Premier League fixture, first back at Hull and later with Leicester City.
It’s from Leicester that United forked out £80m to sign him, a world-record fee for a defender.
It hasn’t always been plain sailing for him at Old Trafford, having faced numerous challenges on and off the pitch. Yet it’s impossible to deny that he’s now playing some of his best football and has truly found himself again.
266 of Maguire’s 600 appearances have come in a United shirt.
The 33-year-old and his teammates are next in action on Sunday when they host bitter rivals Liverpool.
