In the summer of 2019, Manchester United paid £80 million to Leicester City to sign Harry Maguire.
This made him the most expensive defender in the history of the game at the time and generated many headlines.
Maguire has experienced a true roller coaster of a career at Old Trafford.
It started well, as he was made captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer just months after arriving, and he impressed in his first season at the club.
The England defender soon lost his way, though, and a series of high-profile mistakes turned him into an internet meme for how not to defend. He was stripped of the captaincy in the summer of 2023 under Erik ten Hag and was almost sold to West Ham United.
Nonetheless, he kept plugging away and has returned to being a key member of the first-team squad under Ruben Amorim and then Michael Carrick.
The Englishman’s contract runs out this summer, but there are rumours that the Red Devils will seek an extension on lower wages.
With Maguire’s United career coming to a crossroads, The Peoples Person asked its readers to vote on whether he was worth the £80 million the club shelled out for him seven years ago.
Interestingly, 41% of fans voted that he was 100% worth the huge outlay the club spent on him.
What’s more, a further 37% of readers felt that, on balance, the England international has been worth the fee. This means that an overwhelming majority of voters, 78%, feel that Maguire has been a major success at the club.
7% of fans were left unsure whether he was worth the transfer fee paid to Leicester City. This is not necessarily a criticism of his time at the club, but an admission that he was probably not worth a world record fee at the time.
Interestingly, just 15% of fans responded with a negative answer.
10% of supporters felt that he was probably not worth the money, and only the remaining 5% asserted that he was 100% not worth the money United paid for him.
With 261 appearances under his belt for the club, two trophies, and 17 goals, Maguire probably feels he has had a successful career at United in challenging circumstances.
Nonetheless, despite his goalscoring heroics, he has still had some major dips in his form over the years, and the poll results certainly provide an interesting analysis of his time at United.
