Harvey Barnes (28) has been handed a timely recall to the England national football team squad, replacing the injured Eberechi Eze (27) ahead of this month’s international fixtures, BBC Sport has reported.

The Newcastle United winger earns his first call-up since October 2020, when he made his sole senior appearance in a friendly against Wales national football team. His inclusion follows confirmation that Arsenal midfielder Eze has been ruled out with a lower leg injury.

Barnes’ selection reflects both form and opportunity. The 28-year-old has enjoyed an impressive campaign, scoring 14 goals in all competitions, and now returns to the international stage at a moment when Thomas Tuchel is keen to assess emerging and fringe options.

England face Uruguay and Japan in friendlies at Wembley, fixtures that offer Barnes a platform to stake a claim for a more permanent role.

His recall is also notable given recent interest from Scotland national football team, for whom he was eligible. Barnes, however, opted to remain available for England, a decision now rewarded with renewed international opportunity
