Harvey Elliott has insisted he will not be leaving Liverpool in the January transfer window after holding talks with manager Arne Slot.
The attacking midfielder has been linked with moves to Brighton and Borussia Dortmund amid a lack of game time with the Merseyside outfit.
Elliott has not started a Premier League game under Slot, with all eight of his appearances coming off the bench. It was the same story in the Uefa Champions League on Tuesday, but he managed to score the winning goal against Lille after replacing Curtis Jones at halftime.
The 21-year-old celebrated his deflected finish with a gesture suggesting that the speculation over his future was Anfield was just that, and afterwards he shot down any possibility of a move away.
“It is pretty clear to be honest – I am not leaving,” he told Amazon Prime Video. “This is my team and my club. I’m a massive fan and we’re in a great position so far this season.
“I haven’t really seen the chat, but my friends have messaged me and called me about a few things. It is always going to happen in January, especially after being out for a long time and not playing as much as I want to, but that is football.”
Elliott revealed that he spoke with Slot about his situation in the first team, but recognises that it is difficult breaking into a Liverpool side that is top of both the Premier League and Champions League tables.
“I’ve had conversations with the gaffer but at the same time I need to understand the situation,” he said. “The team is flying – we are first in the Premier League and Champions League.
“For me to go in and say I should be starting it would be silly of myself really. You know what the answer is going to be.
“I need to stay patient and when I am getting opportunities, however long it is, just enjoy the moment, especially after being injured for three months at the start of the season.
“I just want to enjoy my football and when a chance comes I need to show the gaffer that if I am needed I am ready.”
Liverpool booked their place in the round of 16 of the competition with a 2-1 win over ten-man Lille. Mo Salah opened the scoring with a brilliant finish in the 34th minute before Jonathan David levelled matters. The Canada international’s equaliser came just moments after full-back Aïssa Mandi was sent off for a secondable bookable, but Elliott restored the host’s lead five minutes later.
