Deniz Undav’s cool finish ten minutes from time secured Die Schwaben their fifth consecutive Bundesliga win, keeping Sebastian Hoeneß’s side firmly in the top-four mix.

Hoeneß praised his side following the hard-fought triumph: 

“I think it was an even match. We had a slightly greater share of the play in the first half and then stepped up another gear after the break. It was important to press home the advantage after the equaliser and see it over the line. We opted for a fresh line-up after the long journey to Istanbul and it paid off. We’re glad about the win - hats off to my team.”

Match-winner Deniz Undav echoed his coach’s sentiments and highlighted the team’s resilience throughout the contest:

“It was a difficult, fiercely contested game. We knew we’d have to work very hard, keep closing down Mainz and at the same time be alert to their counter-attacks. The equaliser from Chris Führich was hugely important for us so that we didn’t go in behind at the break. We did well in the second half, had a good balance between activeness and patience. I’m pleased with my goal - especially as we won the match and got the next win.”

Stuttgart will now quickly turn their attention to the DFB-Pokal, where they face Mainz once again this time on the road for the 2nd round tie between the two sides.
