Watching Manchester City get overrun in midfield during their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa yesterday you could tell that City’s midfield needs fresh legs. Signing an energetic and quality midfielder has to be City’s major priority next month. That has become abundantly clear across Pep Guardiola’s side’s poor run of results.

Manchester City’s midfield lacks energy and appears to be too slow to contend with their rivals. Now a new report indicates that Manchester City have submitted a bid for Atalanta midfielder Ederson. If that report is correct then it seems that City are already making their move to fix the glaring issue with their midfield.

Spanish publication Fichajes has reported that Pep Guardiola’s side has submitted a bid of €70 million for Ederson. Furthermore, the Fichajes report indicates that Manchester United are also interested in signing the Brazilian midfielder. Lastly, the Fichajes report suggests that Atalanta has slapped a €60 million price tag on Ederson ahead of the January transfer window.

Ederson is looming as the player Manchester City needs to reinforce their midfield.

Yesterday saw two reports emerge that Bruno Guimaraes and Martin Zubimendi are not transfer targets for Manchester City in the January transfer window. Sam Lee and Simon Bajkowski both reported that news yesterday. Once that news broke it did raise a question: Who could Manchester City look to sign next month? Now the Fichajes report suggests Ederson is the midfielder City is after.

As a player Ederson would add what Pep Guardiola’s side currently lacks in midfield. He is an energetic midfielder and is also blessed with exceptional technical ability. The Brazilian midfielder reads the game well and has the pace and tactical ability to break up opponents attacks. Those traits stand out in his play for Atalanta. On paper at least he’d immediately add what Pep Guardiola’s side is currently lacking.

Of course there may be a problem with any Manchester City offer for Ederson. Firstly, there appears to be competition to sign the Brazilian. As per the Fichajes report Manchester United are also interested in Ederson. There is also another factor to consider. Atalanta are flying this season. They currently sit on top of the Serie A table. Would they jeopardize their chase for Scudetto by selling one of their most important players? That remains to be seen.

But as per Fichajes report it seems that Manchester City have decided that Ederson is the midfielder they want to sign. It now remains to be seen if they can land the Brazilian midfielder next month. If they can they’d be adding the type of player they need.
